Australia defeated India by five wickets in the opening one-dayer against India at Perth in what was a run-fest. Here’s a compilation of some interesting statistics from the match.
Rohit Sharma’s 171 not out is now the highest score by a visiting batsman against Australia in Australia in one-dayers. Sharma broke the record of Sir Vivian Richards, who made an unbeaten 153 at Melbourne in 1979-80.
Unfortunately, Rohit doesn’t have a great record of winning hundreds. Tuesday’s ton was his fourth in losing causes. Among Indians, Sachin Tendulkar (14) has most hundreds in defeats, but he also played most matches.
Impressively, Rohit now has three one-day tons in Australia. VVS Laxman is the only other Indian batsman with three one-day hundreds, all of those achieved during the 2003-04 tri-series.
Staying with Rohit, Perth was the fourth instance of him getting a 150 plus score in ODIs. Tendulkar (5) has the most one-day scores in excess of 150s.
India’s total of 309 for 3 is now their highest against Australia in Australia, beating the 303 for 4 they achieved at Brisbane in January 2004.
Perth registered the first instance where two double century partnerships were recorded in the same one-day international. Rohit and Virat Kohli added 207 while Steven Smith and George Bailey featured in a 242-run stand.
The 207-run stand between Kohli and Rohit is now the highest second-wicket stand for India vs Australia, beating the 199 between VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar at Indore back in 2001.
Australian captain Steven Smith (149) registered his second consecutive one-day hundred against India. He made 105 in the previous clash between the teams in 2015 World Cup semi-final at Sydney.
Smith’s 149 is now also the third highest score by an Australian captain in ODIs; the highest being 164 by Ricky Ponting against South Africa at Johannesburg.
Smith and Bailey’s partnership of 242 is the fourth highest for Australia in all ODIs. The highest remains 260 between Smith and David Warner against Afghanistan at the same venue during the 2015 World Cup.
Former captain George Bailey averages 85 against India in ODIs. He has played eight matches, and has totalled 595 runs.
The chase of 310 at Perth is now the third most successful in Australia. The highest chase in an ODI in Australia is 334 by the Aussies against England at Sydney in 2011.
A total of 619 runs were scored at Perth on Tuesday. Only once before has a match at the WACA had a higher aggregate, when Australia and New Zealand combined to make a massive 678 in the 2006-07 season.
Virat Kohli’s 91 was his first half-century against Australia in Australia. In seven innings before this, he was averaging a miserly 15.83 with a best of 31.
Barinder Sran dismissed both the openers on debut. Avishkar Salvi was the last Indian bowler to do so.
