Stumps on Day 2

New Zealand have been put on the backfoot in their first innings with all the four Indian bowlers sustaining the pressure right through the 28 overs of cricket in the final session. The visitors are slowly recovering through an unbeaten 42-run stand between opener Brendon McCullum (38* from 75 balls with 7 fours) and Ross Taylor (18* from 61 balls) to finish the second day's play at 69 for 2.

Zaheer Khan and Pragyan Ojha have been the wicket takers for India. The first wicket to fall was that of left handed Tim McIntosh who gloved a lifter from Zaheer Khan to the keeper in the 3rd over. McIntosh was gone for a 10-ball duck. In the 10th over, BJ Watling (6 from 22 balls) showed total inexperience as he didn't cover his off stump for the turn and paid penalty for playing inside the line to get bowled by Pragyan Ojha.

By close on Day 2, New Zealand are trailing behind by a huge deficit of 418 runs with 8 wickets in hand.

Tea on Day 2

Harbhajan Singh came good for India cracking a lovely 69 from 97 balls to help India reach a huge first innings total of 487. The hosts were bowled out in 151.5 overs just at the stroke of Tea when Harbhajan Singh under edged a cut shot off Vettori to the keeper.

It was a bad day for India as they lost seven wickets with the addition of only 158 runs in two full sessions. They lost MS Dhoni (10) within 15 minutes after play resumed after lunch when he got a bat pad edge to short leg off Vettori. Zaheer Khan got bowled by the New Zealand Skipper after going back to a full ball to leave India at 412 for 8.

Harbhajan Singh at this stage used his pyro-techniques and with the help of Pragyan Ojha (11 from 59 balls) added 66 runs for the 9th wicket. Ojha was out lbw after offering no shot to a drifter from Jeetan Patel. Harbhajan was the last man out but not before rescuing India with a fine half century that was laced with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Vettori toiled hard to take 4 for 118 in 54.5 overs while Jeetan Patel got 3 for 135 in 29 overs.

Lunch on Day 1

India crawled from an overnight total of 329 for 3 to 392 for 6 by Lunch on Day 2 in the first Test Match at Ahmedabad against New Zealand. Three wickets fell down in the thirty minutes prior to lunch which meant that the morning session on the second day's play belonged to the Kiwis. Jeetan Patel after having a rough first day fought back to take the two big wickets of the overnight batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, both of them getting dismissed for 40!

Just the 63 runs were scored in this morning session in 30.2 overs. Tendulkar (40 from 133 balls with 5 fours) was the first to go, stepping down the track and only managing to pat a simple return catch to Jeetan Patel. It brought an end to the 66-run stand for the 4th wicket between Tendulkar and Laxman. Suresh Raina who came in next was caught at short extra covers to give part time off spinner Kane Williamson his maiden Test wicket. Raina fell for 3 from 19 balls and just at the stroke of lunch, VVS Laxman (40 from 105 balls with 4 fours) was lazy in not stretching fully forward to get hit on the backpad by a sharp turning off break to be given out lbw.
